It Follows

When this came out it seemed to be part of a trend of horror movies with the theme of STDs as horror. Contracted, Starry Eyes and...well this movie. Are 3 movies a trend?
There are spoilers ahead and ramblilng, if you are worried about such things.
This looks like a pretty typical moralistic teenager horror movie(casual sex is bad!) but there are actually some uncomfortable upsetting ideas here. When we do see IT catch up to someone it apparently rapes them to death! And in that scene IT took the form of the victim's mother. What the fuck? When we know that, and think back to the body of the first victim in the movie with her body bent and snapped apart, our mind starts imagining the most horrific kind of death possible. Pretty hardcore for a teenage horror movie actually.
And then it is strongly implied the main character has sex with 3 guys on a boat to buy herself some times, but apparently it buys her about half a day? Those guys got slaughtered.
The kids set up a trap at a public pool that was actually kind of clever, but what they should have done is all had sex with each other, so they all could have seen it. Then they could have worked together They way they wouldn't have had to point a gun at empty air while screaming "is it here? How about here? What do you see?"
Also, she broke her arm in the middle of the movie, but keeps submerging it in water. Why introduce a broken arm if it actually doesn't affect her actions in any way?
The movie just kind of ended. which at first pissed me off...but you know what? I respect that.
Funny Moment:
The girl says IT has just entered the room and her friends ask what it looks like and she says "I don't want to say, it's too horrible"
When we do see IT, IT turns out to look like....Just some guy? That was the horrible thing she didn't want to describe?
I thought the ending was very odd too. It kind of just petered out.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I didn't get any moralistic themes from this movie in regards to sexual activity. It struck me as very open/progressive and the sex was just a tool used equally by the young men or the women.
Yeah I didn't really get why people like this movie. I like okay ghost is a metaphor for STD, but why is this scary. Just have sex. Was talking with Carla about this movie and she mentioned someone she follows on Youtube talked about how to beat the ghost using distance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiLyQOwH_mk
