Ok, so we have all seen this one now, correct? (UPDATE: WHOOPS - Casey, mild spoilers ahead.) I'm not going to go into the storyline. Weirdly enough, for some reason I legitimately thought this movie was just two couples, sitting around arguing about a boy that is never shown. I guess sort of like Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf or something like that. I have NO idea why I thought that. Obvs, the movie is totally not like that. BUT it IS super messed up. The biggest question for me at the end of it all is, why did she continue to visit him? Why does she still try to include him as part of her life? There are so many conflicts in the expectations put on her as a mother, as a woman, as a wife, and it is all so disturbing.
Also, the sets are really interesting. It kept throwing me off as far as the switching time frames. James pointed out how the house in the "middle" time frame was so empty - no art, empty shelves, etc. I was like, well they just moved in there. Then years later in the same place it's still bare and empty. At the "starting" house though, there's art and masks and travel curios and stuff. Also is this supposed to take place in the 90's or something? How in the world is there a travel agency in the most recent time frame?
Also, weirdest couple ever. Never in a million years would I think of putting Swinton with John C Reilly.
I don't think Casey has seen it yet
ReplyDeleteOh whoops I'll add a spoiler alert.
DeleteWhat if this movie is the mother's guilt and her reflecting on how her child became the way he was? I should go back and see if that hypothesis is true.
DeletePossibly! But that is just as fucked up. Why should she feel guilty? She didn't do anything worse than the mistakes that lots of parents make. And why did her husband not understand the issues? He was willfully blind to it, which just made her have to carry it all. I think part of the kid's psychopathy was the torment of his mother; faced with the divorce and being under his dad's custody seemed to be motivation for some of his actions, or at least sped up his plans.
